How Can AI Help Preserve Human Memory?
Artificial intelligence can help preserve human memory by turning scattered stories, photographs, voice recordings and personal experiences into an organized, searchable archive. But for me, there is an equally important principle: the person whose memories are being preserved should always remain in control of them.
Memories are deeply personal. AI can help us collect, organize and understand them, but it should never decide what somebody’s legacy becomes. The individual should decide what is saved, what is shared, what is changed and whether any of it is passed on at all.
Why Preserving Memory Became Personal for Me
My interest in human memory is deeply personal. I watched my mother’s memories gradually disappear.
It made me realize how much of a person exists only in their memories. The stories they tell, the people they knew, the places they lived, the small details of their lives and the knowledge they accumulated over decades can disappear surprisingly quickly.
At the same time, most of us are creating more information than any generation in history. We have thousands of photographs, messages, videos, documents and recordings. But having enormous amounts of data is not the same as having a record of a life.
We are surrounded by information, but we often don't have a coherent, searchable archive of ourselves.
AI Can Help Turn Information Into Memory

They should decide what their archive contains. They should decide who can see it. They should decide what is private and what is shared. And they should decide whether they want those memories to disappear with them or continue into another generation.
There is something powerful about the possibility that your children or grandchildren could someday understand not only what you looked like, but how you thought, what you experienced and what mattered to you.
But that should always be your choice.

We also wanted memory to exist beyond another digital database.

I think AI has an extraordinary opportunity to help us preserve human knowledge and experience.
Not because AI should decide who we were, but because it can help us hold on to the things that are otherwise so easy to lose.
A memory archive can remain completely private. It can become a book. It can be shared with family. It can become part of a person's legacy. Or it can simply exist as a searchable record that helps someone understand their own life.
The technology should provide the possibilities.
The human being should make the decisions.
